Why this book? How did the idea of writing this book come to you?
When I moved to Greater Noida in 2011, I was struck by the absurd contradictions in our lives. It was a curious mix of city and countryside living. Residents shopped in malls which had sprung up next to fields and lived in big gated societies surrounded by villages. It was hard to get pasteurised milk in packets but building societies had swimming pools and saunas. Fresh vegetables were available straight from the field from farmers who were about to be evicted from their land because a new apartment block was going to be built there. The duality I witnessed as an ‘Urban Villager’ prompted me to write the book. I remember one day looking out of the bedroom window at the bucolic scene of a little village temple, a farmer walking by with his plough, fields stretching in both directions but dotted by construction activity. And I was watching this from a building situated in an erstwhile field belonging to this same village. I think it was at that moment that I thought there’s a story in here that needs to be told: of transformation, of how rural meets urban and the human drama that occurs as these changes unfold.
