Significance and Meaning of DURVA

The meaning and significance of “Durva” is discussed in the Shukla Yajurveda Samhita and the Shatpath Brahmana. It is herb, which is the vital sap, and the ruling power of plants that came from the hair of Prajapati, the First Creator.

It grows and spreads in eternal multiples, remaining green and alive in all seasons. The Gods mixed durva with earth and converted it into perforated brick to restore Prajaapati with it, and performed the Chayan Yagna, praying to Durva for blessing them with everlasting energy, growth, protection, continuous spread and vital strength.
